00:21Top tension banjos use bolts that pass down through holes in the tension hoop to tighten the head of the banjo, and are usually threaded directly in the flange. These were used originally to avoid removing the resonator to tighten or loosen the head. With calfskin heads this must be done frequently as weather changes can have a dramatic effect on head tension.
