Gig Bag  noun  Change text size for readability...  Print This Page
01:15A "Gig Bag" is a lightweight padded, zippered cover for your musical instrument and provides enough convenience and protection to be the good choice for carrying the instrument around a festival and for short distance travel in a car.

Gig bags are made for almost every musical instrument and are often available in a variety of quality options and prices, ranging from a simple inexpensive fabric cover to more expensive choices which feature heavily padded, luxurious interiors and stylized exteriors. Some of the higher-end gig bags can be custom ordered, may be hand-made, and may be made of higher quality and durable nylon fabrics to high quality leather.

The main thing that distinguishes a "gig bag" from a "case" is: a Gig Bag lacks a rigid shell or frame and may be folded away for storage. There are, however, "hybrid" gig bags available that combine the lightweight features of a fabric shell over a rigid metal or plastic frame, but they are still gig bags just the same.

Overall, while Gig Bags may be a good choice for short-distance, light-duty travel, they can never offer the higher level of protection available from a well-made hardshell case.
