Flattop Box  noun \ˈflat-ˌtäp ˈbäks\  Change text size for readability...  Print This Page
00:39The terms "Flattop Box," "Flattop" and "Box" are slang which refer to an acoustic guitar body, especially a dreadnought used for flatpicking.

The term initially descended from guitar makers and factories who used the term "box" to mean a guitar body in production: "This week we're making a lot of boxes; next week we'll do the necks."

A "flattop" instrument also distinguishes itself from archtop instruments, as common sense indicates, and the term extends to any folk-style guitar, with the exception of Classical Guitar (because traditionally, Classical Guitars only have flat tops...)
