Cutaway  noun \ˈkət-ə-ˌwā\  Change text size for readability...  Print This Page
00:23Simply stated, a "Cutaway" is a section of an acoustic instrument body's side walls that is designed to allow the player easier access to the higher frets over the body. The body of such an instrument appears to have been "cut away" to provide this access, thus the term.

Cutaways are generally found within Guitar Family and Mandolin Family instruments.
